A PLACE NEAR A SEA OR OCEAN: I E L T S CUE CARD QUESTION ASKED ON MARCH 1 I am going to talk about a very popular city Trivandrum. It lies in the south western coast of India. I got a chance to visit this city few years back. It’s the capital city of the state of Kerela, which is also known as God’s own Country. It is a beautiful coastal city which earlier was a small fishing village but became very popular for its beaches in the sixties. It’s known for its greenery. It’s so green that Mahathma Gandhi- the father of our nation, even called it one of the best city to live in India. The city is built around 7 small hills all covered with coconut trees and beaches. You will love the climate here as it does not go beyond 32 degree Celsius in the summers and in winters it remains around 20 degree Celsius; as a result, many tourists from around the world and North India flock here during the winters. What I liked most about this city is its beaches. Kovalam beach needs a special mention. There’s miles of fine sand, shark free water for people who love to swim, range of sea food restaurants facing the beach and coconut groves. This attracts lots of visitors here and so tourist industry has flourished in the last few decades. Not only this, there are many ayurvedic saloons known for their herbal treatments. During my visit, I got a chance to travel by a boat for the first time. I was told that during the festival season many boating competitions are held here in which people are eager to participate with great enthusiasm. I also visited the famous temple which was recently in news for its Gold treasure, thought it is only a recent finding. Finally, I am so glad that our country India has such a diverse culture. The food, people their occupation- everything was so different from what we see in the North. I wish I could plan out another visit to Trivandrum and enjoy some sea food once again. Additional Questions: Marine activity Is it important for everyone to learn swimming? How is it different staying at lake or beach? What do you think about saving water? Why some people do not think water as a limited resource?
