A PLEASING AROMA Steak on the barbie. A marinated rack of lamb. Fire up the Weber. Grab the hot sauce and napkins. Have you ever thought about the smell of thousands of cattle and sheep being sacrificed on the alter? Numerous times in the Old Testament God called it a pleasing aroma. Paul said in 2 Cor 2:15 NIV For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. Remember Jesus was the lamb. When asked for the secret of his success, William Booth said: I will tell you the secret. God has had all there was of me. There have been men with greater brains than I, men with greater opportunities. But from the day I got the poor of London on my heart and caught a vision of all Jesus Christ could do with them, on that day I made up my mind that God would have all of William Booth there was. And if there is anything of power in the Salvation Army today, it is because God has had all the adoration of my heart, all the power of my will, and all the influence of my life. Heb 5:12 HCSB Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of Gods revelation again. You need milk, not solid food. I believe the current state of the church in America is that of a nursery. The smell of baby bottles and diapers. Not quite the smell of a sizzling steak. I just read a quote by Neil Cole in his book Primal Fire. We in the western church are educated well beyond our obedience. More education is not the answer, we need more obedience. The next page explained something about education I firmly believe. Education process. Learn it, understand it, practice it, own it, spread it. The last four steps take intentional effort. Summary: We too lazy! Following Jesus is not a spectator sport. We live (die) in churches that are heavily slanted towards teaching and void of relationship and equipping. Relationship is where the Holy Spirits work is revealed and developed in powerful ways. Our churches are even built like a classroom and should be more like a dining room, workshop, or living room. Places where the mess is not only tolerated, but where the character is and the characters are seen and grown. Rooms of support, nourishment, service, cooperation, sharing of joy and burdens. Where everyone is in the band not just watching the band. Every believer should be equipped to serve and to help those around them grow in faith. This can happen when each of Gods people can join William Booth and say God has had all there was of me. Personally, if I were God, I would prefer the aroma of a sizzling steak to a milky wet bib.
