A PREGNANT MOM WRITES: I need some advice. What would you suggest I say to my mother to defend my choice on not cutting my second child? Im a regret mom, and Ive told her countless times about how circ is merely cosmetic and religious and she gets extremely defensive each time and says some pretty hurtful things. He isnt getting cut either way, but I would like to present her with more information on it, considering I live with her and have to listen to her constantly. I would really appreciate any advice you have. ~A friend ---- MY ANSWER: Friend, dont get into an argument about HER feelings. She obviously has some guilt and/or denial issues. Keep it focused on YOUR feelings, how horrible you feel about letting them hurt your first son, and that youd sooner DIE than let it happen to your second son, thats how devastating circumcision is now that you know the gruesome details. Then demand she read this incredible three-part series by Jennifer Andersen at Our Muddy Boots. I can send you other regret stories if you need them. Focus on THAT with her, that she might as well argue with the sun rising in the east as try to convince YOU that YOUR regret is wrong. I was very young when I had my first son, and rather than do research on my own, I listened to her and to the doctor (of course the doctor spewed benefits of it, I was about to hand him $250). Theres no way in hell that Im putting another child through that. I will definitely send you some pictures of little _____ when he is here, wearing his Leave intact and dont retract (seriously, we will sue) outfit. Thanks again for the advice and support.
