A Page A Day...SPECIAL RELATIONSHIPS (Dropkick Murphys video meant to accompany todays post) This is what Stevie returns to. Violence so commonplace, eruptions so constant, that even he cannot contain them. He moves his operation to the Irish community of South Boston, where he forms a partnership with the notorious Whitey Bulger. A man who held South Boston in his fists as tightly as Stevie had once gripped Roxbury. Together they have their henchmen, hired assassins, routinely beat and murder anyone they perceive as threats to the monolithic empire they are constructing. While Stevie had officially become an informant in 12/65, it is unclear when Whitey fell into a partnership with FBI Agent John Connolly. In Stevies testimony, he always claimed that the FBI blackmailed him. That upon his return from Montreal, he no longer wanted to work with them, but was frightened by the FBIs promise that if he didnt cooperate, they would rat him out. Both Bulger and Flemmi act as informants now, the better to eradicate any organized crime other than their own. All of this power is handed to them by rogue agents within the Boston FBI. Even with the accumulation of bodies piling in shallow graves, the FBI continues this unholy alliance. Together their depravity blows mightily into a storm of proportion without bounds. Without heart. Over time, the Boston Globe, discovers from John Morris, Boston FBI Headquarters superior, just how it is that Stevie and Whitey always manage to elude any trouble with the law. The Globe reporters sit down with Morris and begin asking him questions about the two mobsters. Morris tells them, You have no idea how dangerous Bulger is. He He blurts out the whole story. When the story appeared in the fall of 1988, the newspaper felt secure enough with Morris information to describe Whiteys affiliation with the FBI, to describe it as a special relationship. While other mobsters hadnt any doubt what the phrase special relationship meant, Whitey assured one and all, that this was typical muckraking from the Globe, just another attempt to besmirch his brother Billy Bulger, the President of the Massachusetts State Senate. And by the way, although Billy often denied any contact with Flemmi, I wonder how he managed this after Stevie moved his parents in next door to him in South Boston. It was all going to come out now. All the dirty work of the Boston FBI, of how it aided and abetted the terrible wrongdoings of Bulger and Flemmi will soon become public knowledge. Each of these men seemed to be involved not only for money, but for pwer as well. When the FBI learns of the bombshell that is about to be splashed the next day across the pages of the Globe, they have to face what their open policy, their symbiotic relationship has wrought. Yet, there are those within the Bureau, moved by fear of what may befall them, of the shame and very real threat of possible death that could come at them from any given direction, who warn Flemmi and Bulger that their arrests are imminent. Bulger heeded this warning and disappeared into the night, and until his recent capture resided on the FBIs Most Wanted List, second only to Osama Bin Laden.
