A Playlist for Apologists 1 Holy, Holy, Holy Since the beginning of my Christian life, music has been a part of it. I have served several churches as a music minister and worship leader. It is a great joy and responsibility to lead God’s people in worship. Worshipping God is our highest priority as Christians when we meet together in the corporate setting. Music can set the mood for worship services and also can be used to educate the congregation in vital issues in theology. As Christian apologists, we have to note that music can communicate fundamental truths in worship. What songs best aid in reaching those goals in congregational worship? That is the focus of this new ongoing series. The first song is a particular favorite of mine, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” with words by Reginald Heber and music by John B. Dykes. The hymn references Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:8 in which the heavenly host sing in worship around the throne of God. The messages in the hymn points to the holiness of God. Verse three says, “Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, in love and purity.” The Trinity is referenced throughout the hymn, with verses one and four ending with “God in three Persons, blessed Trinity. Of special note to apologists is the second line of verse four, “All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea.” This brings to mind the apostle Paul’s words, “For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made” (Romans 1:20, HCSB). “Holy, Holy, Holy” certain deserves first place when it is used in any order of worship, because the song is a wonderful call to worship. It celebrates God’s holiness and attributes. This great hymn can also lead to conversations and teachable moments about why God deserves our worship.
