A Post from BLOG 444 EARTH. SPACE: THE ONLY FRONTIER (Part 1): In a recent discussion with Lucia, we discussed the importance of “space.” A key concept within the world of two-dimensional art, the space occupied by the object being photographed or painted is known as “positive space.” The area around the object of focus is known as “negative space.” She pointed me toward MC Escher as a famous graphic artist who was a master at working with positive and negative space (mcescher). If you want love and beauty in your life, you will have to become your own master of positive and negative space. On Planet Awkward, it is understood that every living creature needs space, both internally and externally in order to grow and thrive. Anyone who ever had too much on their mind, ate too much, planted a garden or had a roommate would arrive at this simple truth if they explored it. Yet, when one looks around Earth there are literally billions of people living in overcrowded environments. In every level of society: from countries like China, to parts of countries like the Northeast of the United States, to cities such as Los Angeles, to planned communities, to individual houses, to classrooms where the future of Earth are taught, Earth humans are stacked on top of each other. People on Earth have come to live with and manage such endless congestion and compaction, but this is a far cry from growing and thriving. Planet Awkward exists in an artsy universe so we use art to explain life. An Awk sees each life on Earth as the object of a creative piece of artwork that takes shape over a lifetime. Using the basic art principle above, each living person is the “positive space” within the creative work, and the environment in which the person lives his or her life is the “negative space”. To state it more specifically for you individually: YOUR entire life is a piece of art and within that piece of art (your life) is positive space (you) and negative space (your surroundings). Your entire life is a complex painting, and each day is a part of that painting. And within each day you paint the life of you. Each day you are the positive space, and where you are and what you encounter is the negative space. Your entire life unfolds based on this single artistic truth. So, if you want love and beauty in your life, it is critical to understand the relationship between positive and negative space. In other words, you must learn about the intimate and everlasting relationship between you and your environment. The teaser for part 2 is simple: One cannot exist without the other.
