A Prayer for New Year’s Eve “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 2 Cor. 12:9 (NLT) May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Gal. 6:14 (NIV) For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Eph. 2:8-10 (NIV) Dear heavenly Father, on this New Year’s Eve, I want to make one thing real clear. The only resolution that I’m going to make, as we begin the new year, is to abandon myself as fully as I can to Jesus—my righteousness, sanctification, and redemption (1 Cor. 1:30). Jesus is my only boast and hope, confidence and joy; and I praise you for the gift of weakness that makes it easy to affirm this liberating truth. Some trust in horses and chariots, and some in resolutions and rededications; but my hope is built on nothing less, nothing more, and nothing other than Jesus, and his finished work on our behalf. And I am confident that the good work of salvation you have begun in me, you will complete one Day. For so great and grace-full a salvation, I praise, bless, and adore you, Father. During the past year, you were always faithful and loving—even when I questioned your ways and, at times, felt distant from your heart. You are always at work in all things, for your glory and for our good. As we begin the New Year, please help me discern the good works you’ve planned and prepared for me. What do I need to be more about, and less about? Help me to discern between the good and the best, the essential and the non-essential. What relationships would you have me invest more in more fully? What things must I simply let go of? In all things, simply make Jesus bigger and more beautiful in my gaze. So very Amen I pray, in his tender and triumphant name. ~Scotty Smith
