A Profile of the Staff and Students at the DRAG Women’s Centre By Vijay Sharma Our aim at the Women’s Centre is to provide skills for women so they can either make a profession of the skills acquired or they can use these skills for their own personal use and enjoyment. This latter point can clearly be seen in the beauty culture class. Dressing up, learning to tie a sari, learning different hairstyles, how to put on make-up, learning all the techniques for a facial and body massage, etc. is thoroughly enjoyed. Then there is stitching and tailoring, computer training and tuition in maths and English. Currently there are 125 students in the Women’s Centre. These can be divided into three categories. 1) Students who come for tutoring in Maths and English : these are school-going children in the main who are weak in these subjects. 2) Girls/women who are learning stitching/tailoring and beauty culture. When questioned, the majority of girls in the beauty culture group wanted to make it a profession and work in beauty salons; not from the house. The majority of girls in the stitching/tailoring group are taking this class for their personal satisfaction. They want to be independent and make their own clothes. Most did not want to work for a tailoring house. 3) The computer students are looking to the future. They realise that computers are now a universal phenomenon, like the mobile phone, and therefore if they want jobs they have to be able to operate a computer. The students are taught basic computer skills. If we want to generalize, the Women’s Centre has a practical approach towards education and is need based.
