A QUICK THOUGHT ON ECONOMICS, AESTHETICS, TELEVISION, CINEMA, AND SO ON, AND THEN IM GONNA GO PRETEND TO WORK Dept. Some people I know on here, chief among them Damon Packard and Howard S. Berger, are very expert in 1970s MOWs and, to some extent, series. I never got this; grew up with them; found your average HARRY O or MANNIX or whatever pretty mundane. However. Looking at the Billy Wilders recent Anthony Mann retro...I get it. And I get why we are all so excited by TV now. Your average Mann programmer pre-Jimmy Stewart westerns had the following: low budget; short schedule; good but not starry cast; excellent writing; small canvas; two to three action set pieces of a SMALL scale--a foot chase, a car chase, and a ricocheting shootout in a pipe-laden basement, say. Remind you of anything? Like...THE ROCKFORD FILES? I think this is what we like about TV now, where maybe some of these elements are even better. They dont have to win the weekend by eating skyscrapers. Read the ingredients above and see if in your mind they dont make for the best kind of cinematic/televisual art.
