A RABIES REMINDER ........AGAIN Today a dog came to my office referred from the NYC Department of Health . He was in a fight with a skunk. The skunk bit the dog on the head before he, (the skunk), was killed. The DOH was involved because the dog was not up to date on his rabies vaccine. The DOH gave the owner two options. 1. Immediate euthanasia 2. 6 month quarantine at a city shelter at the owners expense. Fortunately for the owner and the dog a compromise was reached. The Dog has to be confined to the owners house and have no contact with other people or animals for 6 months. Any strange behavior must be reported immediately to the DOH. The dog must be examined by a vet once every two weeks for the first 2 months then once a month for the next 4 months. Results of each exam must be reported to the DOH. All of this because there was no current rabies vaccine. DONT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU AND YOUR PET. Dr.L
