A REAL TREAT” We met a lot of nice people on our 4 weeks tour of Ecuador but none more so than Mercedes, the hostess at Puembo Birding Garden. If you need a night or three near Quito airport (and there are no accommodations at the airport yet!) you will not beat this place. Although very convenient for the airport (Mercedes will arrange transfers for $15, same as taxi), trips to the city centre can be arranged but obviously, you cannot walk into the centre. Although the rooms are very good, our bathroom was especially spacious, the real pluses are outside - and Mercedes, of course. There is a very well furnished outside sitting area (partly covered) looking onto the piece de resistance - the bird garden. The garden is not especially extensive but is planted and laid-out to attract birds and it certainly works. You dont have to be an avid birdwatcher to appreciate the birds (or to stay here), the colours or the numbers, etc. but we saw 2 or 3 that we saw nowhere else on our lengthy tour. One point worth making I that this is not an easy place to find, so take a note of the phone no. and get the driver to call Mercedes who will be pleased to give directions. Indeed, Mercedes will do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable and is a mine of information. Her English is impeccable and she will not hesitate to offer an excellent dinner or snack at a very reasonable price - in fact nothing seems too much trouble to her. Give yourself a real treat and have a night or two at the start and/or end of your trip to Ecuador at Puembo Birding Garden, you will not regret it.
