A RED-LETTER DAY IN MY LIFE Tomorrow, 15th March 2014 is a red-letter day in my life. 40 years ago, exactly on 15th March 1974, I joined this profession as a medical representative, proudly carrying the leather detailing bag of a MNC Carter-Wallace Ltd. (now Wallace Pharma, after Indianization. This long journey of 40 years changed me from a ‘boy’ to a ‘gentleman’. I have seen many up’s and down’s, from humiliation to exaltation, having tea in a 5-Star hotel to tea in a wayside tea-stall after a Cycle Meeting or a Training Program! Some of the exciting incidents I shall never forget are - • As a medical representative, being caught in a furlough, but pardoned by my boss with a promise never to repeat it – IT WAS A LESSON I LEARNT – HONESTY IS ALWAYS, AND WILL CONTINUE TO REMAIN, THE BEST POLICY. • Being verbally attacked and abused by FMRAI activist for working after 7.30 pm during joint field work. • Being shouted at and admonished by the then General Manager (Marketing & Sakes) of Wallace Pharma for making 13 calls during joint field work on a single day when the internal council and the management had agreed to a norm of 10 calls/day (Wallace then was strongly unionized) – that was the day i decided to quit Wallace after 14 long years! • And finally being locked up in Hotel Nandan (Guwahati) for three days and two nights by fully armed sten-gun carrying ULFA militants for taking disciplinary action against a field manager who was a sympathizer and also a close relative of a ULFA leader! Feeling very nostalgic today! theenablers.org
