A RESPONSE TO MY EMAIL: Dear Friend: Thank you for contacting me regarding the recent shutdown of the federal government. I appreciate hearing from you and am glad to have the opportunity to respond. On October 1, 2013, the federal government shut down due to the failure of Congress to pass a continuing resolution that would provide funding for the next fiscal year. The shutdown continued until October 16, when Congress passed a continuing resolution to reopen the government. The effects of this shutdown on the American people were significant. Senior citizens, veterans, and farmers were unable to obtain services and nearly 800,000 federal employees were furloughed. This is no way to run the greatest nation in the world and I felt it was essential to end this destructive shutdown as quickly as possible. Some people believed that a government shutdown would put a stop to Obamacare. I have always been adamantly opposed to the presidents health care law and have voted against it over 57 times. Unfortunately, the shutdown of the federal government had no impact on Obamacare because the law was designed in a way that allows for its funding to continue even if the rest of the government shuts down. While I am pleased that the continuing resolution included a provision to prevent fraud by strengthening income verification requirements for Obamacare subsidies, much more needs to be done to end the harm that this law is doing to American families and businesses. I am disappointed that the President and Senate Democrats have refused to even consider any measures to reverse the damage being caused by Obamacare, but I am committed to continuing to work with others in Congress to develop effective strategies for stopping the implementation of this law. I am currently working with both Republicans and Democrats to pass my legislation on biennial budgeting that will bring discipline and responsibility back to Congress and reduce the likelihood of future government shutdowns. I firmly believe that the lawmakers in Washington need to put the American people first so that we can best serve the nation going forward. Sincerely, Johnny Isakson United States Senator Rand Paul Walker
