A RETURN to his musical roots is proving a real pick-me-up for cancer sufferer Johnny Dickinson. The singer-guitarist made his name with Morpeth band Splitcrow in the 1980s. They enjoyed a brief spell of fame with their album Rockstorm which drew critical acclaim from the music press and charted at number 19. After management differences led to Splitcrows break-up, Johnny spread his wings with a solo career which saw him tour throughout Europe and America. That all came to a halt three and a half years ago when he was diagnosed with blood cancer, and then, to complicate matters further, with a neurological condition which saw him hospitalised for six months. Now, while still undergoing treatment, he has started playing music again and was delighted when one of his old Morpeth bandmates asked him to take part in a 30th anniversary reunion. For the past few months Johnny, Bob Davidson, Barry Winlow and Nigel Stawart have been dusting off their back catalogue in readiness for a charity concert which took place tonight at The Riverside Lodge, Morpeth. Johnny, who now lives in Alnwick, said: Music is a great therapy, all the doctors tell you that, and it has been really lovely to start playing again. The band was filmed during the soundcheck before tonights performance.
