A RIDER’S STORY- THIS IS WHY RDA MATTERS When RDA Riverland rider Michelle Jaeschke started riding in 2010 she didn’t cope well with people and didn’t like change. Michelle’s first horse was Buddy but because of a change in weight she had to transfer to Zak. Initially this was a difficult transition but Michelle has ridden Zak for 12 months and he is now her favourite horse. A few weeks ago Zak was sick and Riverland president Jodie Pearn notified Michelle’s accommodation staff that Zak would not be available to ride and suggested it might be better to cancel the lesson. Unfortunately, the message was not passed on, so Michelle and her care worker arrived at the centre as usual. It was explained that Zak was sick and that Obey was the only horse available for her to ride. Michelle stunned everyone and without any convincing she rode Obey and really enjoyed it. In one lesson Michelle went from riding a 13 hand pony to a 15 hand horse! This was a great achievement for Michelle, who recently won an award from Orana Enterprises, in part because of her achievements through riding with RDA. Jodie says that when Michelle first started riding she was withdrawn but now has more confidence and says hello to everyone by name at the centre. Michelle also competed (for the first time) at the recent RDA SA Mounted Games.
