A Rod Serling “Night Gallery” episode from 1971 (on Me-TV): A mom somehow inadvertently travels 20 years into the future to find a grownup version of her son happily married and living in a futuristic 1990 house with an all-white interior and (for an unexplained reason) a touch-tone phone with redial in a big open kiosk. The son’s an electronics genius who’s just invented what’s basically Google Maps. His mapping system is complete with a keyboard and a display—only it’s not connected to an internet or otherwise part of a larger computer system. The show’s strange prophecy reminded me of “Design for Loving,” a 1958 “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” episode written by Ray Bradbury: In 1985, husbands and wives have the option to replace their spouses with exact robotic duplicates. But the only other sign of technological change in the couples’ apartment is hot-and-cold-running coffee and orange juice spigots in the bathroom. (??)
