A SHOCKING ADMISSION: I am not that enamored of Thomas Jefferson or his enduring theories of direct, participatory democracy. I adopt a more Hamiltonian perspective, and I (literally) thank God every day for that extra layer of bureaucracy and designed buffer zone that protects the people from themselves. Call it aristocracy and/or elitism if you must, but I call it the best fail-safe system in the world when an ill-advised, ill-bred populace starts trying to bring to the table (for a vote) patently offensive postulations such as I dont like them thar gays or I dont like them thar Mexicans. As for me and my house, I am quite content the final policy decisions on such pressing societal questions normally rest behind closed doors in the hands of skilled bureaucrats or highly specialized committees. Id rather not be ruled, thank you, by a backwoods electorate pulling the voting lever with one hand and rhythmically chanting and pounding a pitchfork with the other.
