A SLICE OF LIFE in the “Religion News” of Charlotte - I took a peek at the local Religion News in today’s newspaper and found a slim sampling of what we know as the exciting days of summer life in church. When I say slim - I mean slim - but it was entertaining. Only the following five events were listed - O taste and see: (1) Billed as an all-day COMMUNITY FESTIVAL on the theme of “Christmas in July,” one organization called Come and Dine Ministries offers entertainment, crafts, story time, prizes and free ice cream today. Needs a white elephant gift exchange. (2) A coffee house in Gastonia calls this a “WORSHIP EVENT - The Charlotte area’s first ever “Beer and Hymns” program to be held 7-9 p.m. tonight. At a coffee house? (3) A Baptist congregation has a FREE DRIVE THRU for coffee, lemonade, donuts and chicken biscuits next Friday morning. (4) A Presbyterian congregation features a concert of The Singing Men of America (that must be a very large choir) presenting CHRISTIAN and PATRIOTIC songs next Sunday night. (I appreciate that they make a distinction between Christian and patriotic songs because they’re not the same thing.) (5) A Methodist congregation has announced a sermon series drawn from classic and popular works of literature. What a novel idea. I guess five listings were all they had room for, because when I went on line to copy and paste details here, I found all other sorts of offerings, such as exotically named VBS and CAMP opportunities (with names like “Jungle Safari’s Weird Animals”, “Agency: D3 - Discover, Decide, Defend,” and “Wilderness Escape!”) and mission trip adventures, not to mention the obvious (boring?) stuff like Bible studies, classes and offers for individual, marriage, and family counseling. Also missing were all of the CONCERTS (free and ticketed) of interesting traveling gospel quartets and family singers and evangelists. Lastly, a large local Methodist congregation offers an upcoming program of “Hymns and Hot Dogs.” Guess their blurb was trumped by the one for Hymns and Beer. Enjoy the weekend!
