A SPECIAL PRAYER REQUEST: My good friend and archaeologist, Bill - TopicsExpress

A SPECIAL PRAYER REQUEST: My good friend and archaeologist, Bill Burkart, has fallen seriously ill, in his long battle with cancer. He is the person I have been assisting in locating, documenting, photographing, and restoring old, abandoned Cherokee Cemeteries. It is through his teaching about the cemeteries and my decades of computer experience, that I am now designing and creating a Cherokee Cemeteries Database, for Public access in the future. PLEASE SAY a PRAYER for this generous, kindhearted person, who has donated all his time, energies, and immense intellect for over five years for the Public Good, and to preserve and pay tribute to our Cherokee heritage. - On the Old Cherokee Cemetery Restoration Project, initiated by Bill Burkart, of the Tahlequah Archaeological Society, and myself: - - A story about our project was published in the Tahlequah Daily Press, on Friday, October 18th, 2013. - The cemeteries are as small as one or two graves, located in the middle of a field or deep in the woods. The grounds work entails mainly weed-eating, raking, and cutting weeds and brush growing over and near the graves. Also, broken or vandalized headstones must be repaired, and the cemeteries need to be fenced, to protect them from future damage. Many of these previously lost cemeteries are not on any records, and photographs and recording must be done. Many of the ones already identified have fallen into disrepair, by neglect or lack of awareness of the landowner. - Some of the persons buried there were born in the early 1800s, and part of the tombstones are inscribed in Cherokee Syllabary. - The project is organized and operated by Bill and myself as our personal Public service, in multiple counties of northeastern Oklahoma. - *** See Sean Rowleys front page feature story, “Resting in Peace”, in the Tahlequah Daily Press, Friday, October 18th, 2013 edition. *** - tahlequahdailypress/local/x2112899982/Resting-in-Peace -
