A STARBUCKS STORY: The old woman is close to 100 years old, and she comes here often with her nurse. When the nurse goes to get food, the old woman tries to get the attention of the man sitting next to her. When he finally looks up and takes off his headset, she fixes a steely look at him and says: I can say things to people because I am 96 years old. She uses this line on everyone; the first time she used it on me was to tell me, You remind me of a cute dancer I used to know. He was gay, very gay. I was a dancer myself. And we became good friends because we both liked dancing and handsome men.) Now, she tells the man with the headset: Youre tall. I love tall people. I love, love, love, love tall people. He says, You look tall. She replies, I am shrinking. He says I think we all can look forward to that. I have no idea what he means, or why he suddenly switches the conversation to talk about opera. But the old woman is true: When you are 96, you can say anything you want and people will listen. But my guess is shes said stuff like this to people since she was 6.
