A STORY ABOUT SLOW-SPEED PURSUITS FROM THE ODT. Drivers on slow side of the law By Rebecca Ryan on Mon, 5 Jan 2015 Oamaru police have been involved in two low-speed pursuits of foreign drivers since Friday. Acting Sergeant Carl Pedersen reported two incidents of foreign drivers who were unaware that if they were being followed by a police car with flashing blue and red lights, they must pull over and stop as soon as possible. On Friday afternoon, three police cars were involved in a low-speed pursuit which ended outside the Severn St entrance of the Oamaru Public Gardens. [The driver] was not trying to get away, but [was] not stopping, Act Sgt Pedersen said. Another vehicle failed to stop for police on Thames Highwayon Saturday night. It was followed by police until the driver eventually stopped between Eden and Coquet Sts. Its just foreign drivers not understanding what they are supposed to do, he said. Act Sgt Pedersen said the number of drivers who failed to pull over and stop for police with lights flashing on the way to emergencies was also a concern. Many drivers only veered slightly off the road to allow police to pass, making it very difficult ... and dangerous for police who then had to pass moving vehicles. [email protected]
