A SUNDAY MESSAGE ON SATURDAY NIGHT: “THANKSGIVING - TopicsExpress

A SUNDAY MESSAGE ON SATURDAY NIGHT: “THANKSGIVING RECLAIMED” Psa 100:1 A Psalm of praise. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Psa 100:2 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Psa 100:3 Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Psa 100:4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. Psa 100:5 For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. I can’t think of a better Psalm then Psalm 100 to represent the Thanksgiving Season. It seems to have it All, Praise expressions in singing and the giving of thanks, verse 4 tells us to come prepared with an Attitude of gratitude when we enter His House. Verse 5 declares His mercy and truth to be everlasting and something that can be passed down from one generation to the next. Here’s the expected line: “We all have so much to be Thankful for”. Expected but true. Most of us have Family and friends. That alone is a big deal. Think of Thanksgiving with no one. Think of life with no Family and not a friend. When the day is done no one to turn to, no one to come home to. Even if you live alone; if you have somebody somewhere to call a friend you got something. Thanksgiving should make us consider these aspects of life. The original Thanksgiving is not what most think. It wasn’t one meal, and a peace offering with native Americans. It was a three day affair of prayers, thanksgiving, sermons, friendship, feasting and Rejoicing and the singing of hymns, marching to military formations, games of various sorts. But at the Heart of it was the central idea of Thanking God for a successful harvest and help from their Indian Friends. The winter of 1620 was so harsh that half of the pilgrim group was lost. They had grown enough food with the help of the native brother and sisters to feed the whole settlement and the native village. It was cause for celebration. The pilgrims came here for religious freedom, thanking the almighty God for the harvest was their custom. So this is what they did. This time it was with renewed vigor and exhilaration due to the amazing journey they had embarked upon. How far we’ve drifted. Football and fatness crown the day. I won’t go on the usual rants of Anti materialism and American holiday commercialization. Short and sweet after you have had All the good stuff to eat in the flurry of football and food, don’t forget the Lord – Psalm 100:4 “Be thankful unto Him”. Deuteronomy chapter 8 verse 10 states “when thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee”. God Bless Be Safe and Be Thankful!
