A SUNDAY SERMON : If you are not guilty - take no offense but perhaps take it forward & educate your family or neighbour. If you are guilty- please LEARN & take action ie prevent this from happening.... Shayne received a phone call after hours yesterday about a cat that had arrived at a house a month ago- people were feeding it. They had just come back from holiday & she had kittens earlier on in the day. But something was not right- the cat was not suckling her kittens & there was stuff hanging out the back. As the cat was just a few blocks down from Coreens home in Witpoortjie- Shayne asked Coreen to go past & collect the cat & get it to the vet when they opened for Saturday afternoon consulting hour. Shayne then phoned me & apologized & said she would take the wrap for this call. Take the wrap ...why ... you may say? Its quite simple .. FORA is home to 450 animals at this stage- we OWE it to those animals to house, feed, maintain & give medical care- we do this PURELY on fundraising & donations SO we cannot be a mobile service to the public as well for their irresponsible animal ownership AND still pick up the publics medical bills. If we do this we can shut our doors on those we help because we would be drowning in the publics debt & our big FORA ship would sink !! Back to the cat.... Coreen goes & collects the cat ...with all the stuff hanging out the back PLUS the 3 newborn kittens & takes the whole box & dice to our vet Doc Dion (yes we pay him end of every month without fail or we dont get vet services) She waits for the Saturday afternoon consulting hour & Doc D checks out the Mommy cat. Mommy (about 4yrs old) is in severe shock, she has 1 kitten still stuck in the uterus & the uterus has prolapsed. Prolapsed ?? Yes that is when the uterus that should remain in the body has been squeezed out the body like an inside out sock because something went wrong during labour. At this point , I am waiting for the phone call because it falls in my hands to take the final call...... treat the Mommy or PTS the Mommy. In a case like this my heart always says TREAT... & then I have to ask my head for a second opinion & this is the really tough part. How long has the cat been like this? She has been lying almost all day with inside bits hanging out- so there is a risk of infection & she is already in shock, there is still a kitten inside- so more cutting & suturing, what are her chances of recovery? How much extra pain am I going to put this cat through & then more than likely we lose her anyway ? I took the call...& told Coreen to tell Doc S to PTS. My next instructions to Coreen was to pick up a can of Royal Canin Kitty milk on the way out the door , charge it to FORA & take the kittens home & bottle feed.... 3 kittens that have not had colostrum... we can only give them our best shot
