A Schoolgirl’s Diary (North Korea) 2007 The last thing I - TopicsExpress

A Schoolgirl’s Diary (North Korea) 2007 The last thing I expected to see was the image of Mickey Mouse on the backpack of a young North Korean girl on her way to school. This is the first North Korea film to get international distribution – by a French company – and it tells the story of a young girl growing up who resents her scientist father because he’s so dedicated to his work and spends too much time away from his family. The film presents a family living in a house – the young girl dreams of living in an apartment – with a color TV and VCR and a somewhat idyllic lifestyle. There’s a rousing sing along to “Our Dear General” at the neighborhood picnic, although the film stays – for the most part – to a coming-of-age tale with the usual challenges of an absent father and an ailing mother. And then in a soccer match between the scientists and the factory workers, the father is redeemed and the daughter decides to become a scientist as well realizing sacrifice is required for the struggle of the revolution. And, the family gets an apartment.
