A Serving Story by: Jane Reid It was truly a blessing to gather with God’s children of all ages and races the other day. I had the privilege of being a part of Field Day at Hawkins Elementary School representing our church, Main Street UMC, at the invitation of Laurie Herring. It was a time of reflection for me. I went to Hawkins when I was growing up in Hattiesburg. We were asked to come and be instructors and help the children to play the games fairly. It was a beautiful day. The sky was blue and there was a breeze that seemed to blow every time you needed it. The music made me feel like I had stepped back in time, and in that moment I was a child on that playground. I was looking through the eyes of my inner child who was once on that same playground learning the very same principles. Our game was simple. It consisted of a group of children walking around hula hoops until the music stopped, and then they would all try to step into a hula hoop on the ground at the same time. If there were six children there were five hula hoops on the ground, and so on. You had to be paying attention when the music stopped to step into a hula hoop before the others. I watched as the children played. Some tried to push others out of the hula hoops when the music stopped. Others looked to us to make the right call, and then there were those who seemed to be mad and beaten down by life. They went out with a bad attitude, exiting slowly and unwillingly. It reminded me of how important the role models in our lives are and the influence that we all have on each other. We need to remind ourselves that each day we should be trying to grow more into the likeness of God and shape our lives into what He says His Kingdom looks like. It is very important for each child to understand that these rules and principles will shape who they will become. We need to place ourselves around role models that help us to become the people we want to be, not only now, but all of our lives. The power of WE is how we will get there. Grace and Peace, Jane Reid
