A Sheryl Crow songs asks: If it makes you happy, then why the hell are you so sad? Valid question! There are a least 2 perspectives from which to ponderize that thought. The unregenerate (lost, unsaved) person is always on a quest to be happy or find fulfillment in whatever life has to offer. Seeking to achieve Nirvana and never finding it results in a long succession of quick fixes that ultimately lead to frustration and/or sadness. On the other hand, the regenerated (saved) person often experiences the sadness of a failed theology that promised giddiness, laughter and a life free of struggle and thus in their walk of faith that was supposed to make them happy, they are found to look and act more sad than an old bassett hound. Let me state here that there is Nothing wrong with seeking happiness, joy, laughter and fulfillment. These are obviously good emotions for which one should desire. A mature faith in the God of Creation, however, teaches one that our quest, our earthly journey, our walk of faith is to be centered on the person of Jesus. When we grasp that His life was lived with the full spectrum of human experience and range of emotions, then we position ourselves to be Content in all things as the Apostle Paul writes in his letter to the church in Phillipi. We dont ALWAYS have to experience the drug of a warm fuzzy feeling.....whether up or down, rich or poor, sick or healthy, etc... we (the saved) are secure in the knowledge that God provides for His Children in every circumstance that comes our way. In that true knowledge we find something much greater than the fleeting emotion of surface happiness......DEEP ABIDING JOY!!! Oh you can continue to be the hook line of the Sheryl Crow song or you can... Come to Christ. Know His Promises and forever Walk Contently in the Joy of His resident Holy Spirit.................. Not really much of a choice is it?
