A Slower Pace Read Exodus 20:1-17 Encouragement for the day – “Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.” Exodus 20:9-10 ESV Recently I have been moved from a busy engine company to a slower truck company. Throughout my career I have enjoyed being on busy companies, running up and down the streets of Washington, DC. There have been times that I have been up for 24 hours straight and have come home exhausted. I learned early on that after busy nights, especially after having fires, not to close my eyes for prayer at church. On more than one occasion I have bumped my head on the pew in front of me. Now that I am close to retirement I am enjoying the slower pace of this new firehouse in upper northwest Washington. In a typical 24 hour shift we average 1 one emergency response. After God’s people were ushered out of Egypt by Moses God gave them a commandment. This new commandment, one among 10, would cause them to slow down and take a break. The Israelites were used to working tirelessly as slaves while in Egypt and God had not designed the body to perform in this way for long periods of time. Pausing and taking a break should cause us to reflect on all of the good things God has done for us during the week like providing for our needs and answering our prayers. As we are able to sit and reflect on God it should cause us to worship him with awe and reverence. This time of reflection and worship is good so that we can refresh our minds and our bodies. Lord, help me to honor You by remembering to slow down and rest in You. Encouragement is a priority!!
