A Somali scholar (Dr Abdirashid Mohamed Ismail) asserts that the infamous and legendary Somali Queen Caraweelo (Araweelo) -- who destroyed (temporarily) the Somali patriarchy and instilled fear into the hearts of Somali men -- was in fact an Ethiopian-Cushitic Jewish Queen. His points (and evidenced): 1. She was an Agaw Queen named Yudit/Gudit (Judith) that destroyed the Aksumite Empire in 960 AD, thereby temp terminating the Solomonic dynasty. She is both despised by the Somalis and Ethiopian Christians. 2. He argues that the Somali name (Caraweelo) can be divided in to two morphemes Carro and Weelo to denote the origin of the the Cushitic queen. Carro = soil (country) and Weelo = the region in Ethiopia where the Queen hailed from. Thus, Caraweelo would translate as the the country of Weelo. 3. The legendary Somali ogress (Dheg-dheer or Buti) is another figure for the infamous Queen. The name Buti, according to the author, is merely a Somali reformulation of the Amharic Gudit. 4. He mentions that the campaign of male castration is to be taken metaphorically and be referred as mental castration. In an another point, he states that the Agaw (origin of the Queen) name is phonetically close to cadhgow (castrator in Somali) and that the Somalis residing in Western Somalia have a habit of calling the inhabitants of Weelo: Cadhgow.
