A-State Men’s Golf Finishes 11th at FGCU Tournament ESTERO, Fla. (10/28/14) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team shot a final-round 315 Tuesday at the Homewood/Hilton Garden Airport & FGCU Classic, ending the two-day tournament played at the Old Corkscrew Golf Club in 11th place out of 14 teams. Competing against a field featuring several top-100-nationally-ranked teams, including No. 1 Florida State, Arkansas State ended Monday’s play in 10th place. The Red Wolves finished the first round in ninth with a 306, but shot a second-round 310 that dropped them to 10th before falling one additional spot in the standings today. “We had a tough day out there today, so we weren’t pleased with our performance,” said A-State head coach Steve Johnson. “We had a pretty good round going about two-thirds of the way through and let it get away from us. This was a good field that included the number one team in the nation, so we gained some good experience and were able to see some areas we need to work on moving forward.” A-State was led by junior Seth Garner, who finished tied for 34th place with a combined 230. Garner’s total included a second-round 74, which matched freshman Tanner Napier’s total for the opening 18 holes for the lowest single-round score of the tournament by an A-State player. Freshman Petter Salqvist shot a combined 235 (77-78-80) to tie for 42nd place and follow Garner in the individual standings for A-State. Freshman Trent Jones improved his score each round and moved from 65th place following the first round to tied for 45th in the final standings. He turned in a combined 236, which included a team-best 76 for the final round. “I was impressed with Trent Jones this week,” said Johnson. “This was just his third tournament overall and his first time in the lineup, so to see him come through with the low final-round score on the team shows he can be a big contributor for this team. I thought we did some good things with three freshmen and a sophomore in the lineup, but we need to be more consistent.” Nappier concluded the tournament tied for 55th place with a combined 238. Also competing for Arkansas State, sophomore Matthew Loiacano placed tied for 58th with a 239. Florida State claimed the tournament championship with an 867, while No. 53 Florida finished runner-up with an 880 and St. Mary’s (Calif.) third with an 895. The Red Wolves return to action Nov. 3-4 when they host the A-State Fall Beach Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala.
