A-State Volleyball Earns Split in First Day of Magnolia Invitational OXFORD, Miss. (9/6/13) – The Arkansas State (1-5) volleyball team earned its first win of season in a hard fought match against Kennesaw State 3-2 (25-18, 24-26, 21-25, 25-22, 15-8) after dropping the first match of the day to Georgia Southern by a score of 3-1 (25-15, 25-18, 24-26, 25-15). A-State and Kennesaw State (1-4) battled to a 14-14 tie in the first set before the Red Wolves took over. A kill by freshman Kelsey Reis made the score 15-14 and A-State ended the set on an 11-4 run, capped by a service ace from Sarah Kemp, to win the first set 25-18. Kennesaw State jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set before an A-State 6-1 run made the score 8-7. ASU got ahead of the Owls by a score of 20-16 when Sadie Clark had a string of three kills in four points. Kennesaw State closed out the set strong with a 10-4 run to defeat the Red Wolves in the set 26-24 and tie the match at 1-1. In the third set, A-State led 15-10 after a Reis kill, but the Owls responded once again with a strong 15-11 run to win the set 25-21 and take a 2-1 lead on the Red Wolves. The fourth set was back and forth with neither team getting ahead by more than two points until A-State earned a 24-21 lead on an Owl attacking error. After one Kennesaw State point, Reis ended the set with a kill for A-State to win the set 25-22 and tie the match 2-2. The deciding fifth set was dominated by A-State. Kennesaw State got within 11-8 after a kill, but a 4-0 run to end the set earned ASU the 15-8 win and 3-2 match win. The Red Wolves had a .583 hitting percentage in the set, compared to the Owl’s -.059. Clark led the Red Wolves in kills with 16 while Kemp added 15 of her own. Reis added 13 kills on a .444 attacking percentage. Jackie Gerig led the Red Wolves in assists by handing out 45 during the match. Defensively, Megan Baska led A-State with 24 digs and the Red Wolves had 14 total blocks, led by Kelsey Sullivan with eight block assists. ASU also had seven service aces for the match, led by Kemp with four. “It’s been hard for us to play together as a team so far because we have so many freshmen and other newcomers,” A-State volleyball coach David Rehr said. “It was nice to finally come together for a match and get our first win. I hope this is a sign of things to come.” The first set against Georgia Southern (5-1) started out poorly for the Red Wolves as the Eagles raced out to a 17-3 lead. A-State got within 21-15 on a kill by Clark but Georgia Southern finished the set on a 4-0 run to win the set 25-15. A-State got off to a much better start in the second set and led 11-8 after an Eagle attacking error. Georgia Southern responded with a 10-4 run to take an 18-15 lead and went on to win the set 25-18. Down 2-0, the Red Wolves responded in the third set by overcoming a 15-12 deficit. A-State responded with a 6-0 run to take the lead 18-15. The Eagles called timeout and responded with a 3-0 run of its own to tie the set at 18-18. The points went back and forth until the set was tied 24-24. A kill by Taylor Szypulski gave the Red Wolves a 25-24 lead and a ball handling error gave A-State the 26-24 win and put the match at a 2-1 count. ASU got off to a slow start in the fourth set and was down 12-7 before a 4-0 run capped by a Markie Schaedig ace got the Red Wolves within one point at 12-11. A timeout by Georgia Southern stopped the rally for A-State and the Eagles never looked back as they finished the set on a 13-4 run to win the set 25-15 and the match by a score of 3-1. Clark led the Red Wolves in kills with 15 and Sullivan finished the match with 11 kills on a .391 hitting percentage. Gerig led the Red Wolves in assists by dishing out 31 in the match. Defensively, A-State was led by Baska’s 14 digs, while Shelby Crncic added 8 of her own during the match. The Red Wolves square off against host Ole Miss (3-2) Saturday Sept. 7 at 1:30 p.m.
