A Survey of The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians Excerpt: I have placed some key phrases in bold lettering as examples of how well developed our Christian doctrines were by the late 1st century: Doctrines, thought by some to be controversial, such as the deity of Christ and predestination are clearly seen in this epistle. Ignatius to the Ephesians was written by a man who is believed to have been carefully placed by the providence of God in the midst of the apostles as a child, and was personally discipled by the very John who wrote the Gospel that boldly presents Jesus Christ as God, very God. This epistle of Ignatius alone destroys the false teaching that the deity of Christ is a late doctrine not heard of till the 4th century. It also puts forth doctrine concerning the election and predestination of the saints, as well as the doctrine of the Holy Spirit literally indwelling every believer in Christ Jesus. It also affirms the doctrine that confession alone is not proof of genuine salvation, but that ones works will reflect the reality of the inner working of the Holy Spirit in their life; this is the New Birth and subsequent sanctification (holiness) process experienced by every person who sincerely places their trust in the finished work of Christ alone. [see, John 3:1-21] Ignatius so delighted in his name Theopharus, God-bearer, that it is worth noting how deeply the early Christians felt and believed in the indwelling Spirit (2Cor_6:16).
