A TANGLED MESS If given the choice, I would’ve chosen to hoe - TopicsExpress

A TANGLED MESS If given the choice, I would’ve chosen to hoe up every weed in the county instead of picking those pinto bean snaps…but I had been told to get it done. With a plastic United sack in hand, my knees hit the dirt. I looked the bean row up and down…it was a tangled mess. I doodled in the dirt, procrastinating. I felt defeated before I even began- I didn’t even know where to start. After coming to terms with the fact that the beans weren’t going anywhere..and nor was I until the job was done, I sighed and lifted up a wad of plants and got to work. I also knew that this was going to be a long hard row. I sifted through the tangled vines- most of the beans grew underneath the tangles. The flat snaps were easy to miss. That was one reason it was a tough job- it required my full attention, diligent efforts and patience. I sifted and picked for what seemed like hours, and only had but a small handful of pinto snaps in my bag. I felt like I’d never get done with this terrible chore..but with persistence eventually I did and those were the best beans I’d ever tasted…maybe because I had worked so hard to get them. Life will deal us tangled messes that we may be reluctant to start digging through. We will see long, hard rows that find us questioning where to even start. But just like those treasured pinto bean snaps hidden underneath the wads of vines, we will find good beneath most any tangled mess. We just have to have the will, the discipline and the patience to keep digging until we spot it. The fruits of our labor will be good too.
