A TIPS FROM SCISSORS MAN! Good Saturday to you all. Hope that your sewing machines are humming and purring like a well-oiled machine, and your scissors are performing at their best. I would like to share some tips that will ensure your scissors perform at their best and following these simple steps will ensure your cutting pleasure. 1) After each use of the scissors simply wipe the blades with a soft cotton cloth. Removing any debris in the path of the cutting edge will ensure a clean precise cut. 2) Oiling and lubricating your scissors is a must. When you are cutting your fabric, fibers from the fabric get in the pivot of the scissors and get wrapped around the screw and cause them to bind, squeak and squawk, and any type of penetrating oil will work. Also if you live in a humid climate the moisture can cause some scissors that are made with too much carbon to rust. Scissors tend to rust from the inside screw are out, and lubricating will help prevent that from happening. Simply run a small bead of oil up each blade and in the pivot (screw area) and around the outside of the screw, open and close the scissors several times. (NOTE: Cutting air will not damage the cutting edge, no matter how thick the air is!) This will push out any foreign debris that may be caught in the screw area and help prevent rusting in those scissors with too much carbon. If this is your first time doing an old pair of scissors, you may see a lot of BLACK or RUST come out, this is good. If this occurs keep repeating the process until the scissors achieve a smooth action. How often should you lubricate your scissors, if you use them daily, lubricate them weekly, if you use them weekly, lubricate them monthly. 3) Once you have finished lubricating your scissors, take a clean soft cotton cloth and wipe off the excess lubricant from the scissors. This is to prevent the lubricant from transferring on to your fabric. 4) Make sure your scissors are properly adjusted and balanced. The set of the scissors are very important and screw adjustments and tension should only be performed by a professional. Consult with your retailer or refer to the back of our packing for more details. A scissors that is too loose can cause damage to the scissors as well as chewing the fabric. 5) Sharpening! When do a scissors need to be sharpened? This is a question that is asked of us often. It is important that if you start to see your scissors PUSHING the fabric instead of cutting this is a sure sign that your scissors are in need of a scissors doctor. In this case a scissors that is just pushing a little may need to be slightly honed. If the scissors is binding your fabric, you cut a straight pen or something that has nicked or gouge, no question your scissors need a surgeon. 6) Choosing a sharpener is not an easy task. Matching the angle of the original cutting edge is the most important part. If the edge is altered you have changed the function or purpose of the scissors all together. This task should be performed by a professional and you can refer to your retailer or see the back our insert card for more information. 7) Storing your scissors. It is very important that you keep the scissors in the original package when not in use. This will help prevent the scissors from getting damaged, or damaging anything in the stored area. We hope this information is helpful to you and following these steps will ensure your Famore Scissors and shears a life time of cutting pleasure.
