Earlier today, David Cameron announced that the UK government will make information about who owns and controls companies available to the public. Its a huge win in the fight against the phantom firms that rob African countries of resources that could be used to combat extreme poverty. And its thanks to you. Heres a snippet from Cameron’s speech: Thank you to the ONE Campaign for campaigning so vigorously on this. I do think its important as we try and raise levels of prosperity, particularly in the poorest countries in our world, that we make arguments about aid and development but we ally those with arguments about transparency and institutions and the rule of law. And that is what the ONE Campaign does so effectively. Handing in the petition at Number 10 All of us can sometimes feel that when we stand up for what we know is right, we won’t be heard. But when we stand together as ONE, we can’t be ignored. That’s what happened today. You were heard. And the public disclosure of information that we asked for, and that David Cameron has now promised, is bad news for criminals, corrupt businesses and politicians... and very good news for the fight against extreme poverty. That fight isnt over. Theres more to do in the UK, including getting trusts as well as companies covered by any legislation in order to close any loopholes, and then repeating this victory across Europe.
