A TON of Jack Kerouac books came in yesterday! Several copies of On the Road, including the original scroll. The story (supposedly) is that Kerouac was writing so furiously that he didn’t want to take the time to put new sheets of paper into his typewriter, so in fed a 120-foot roll of tracing paper and typed out his first draft on that. What’s more, the scroll version is longer, racier, and uses the real names of the principal characters --Neal Cassady, Allen Ginsberg, and so on— while the final version is a roman a clef. Also on the shelf, a couple copies of the Dharma Bums one of Desolation Angels, and some Kerouac anthologies!
