A TRIBUTE TO ARNOLD PALMER A golfing great indeed he is, winning first at The Country Club of Detroit (The U.S. Amateur, 1954), then at Weston (The Canadian Open, 1955), and at Augusta National (The Masters, 1958, 1960, 1962, 1964), and then later at Cherry Hills (The U.S. Open, 1960) and also at Royal Birkdale and Troon (The British Open, 1961, 1962), to mention but a few. But there is greatness in his character as well, a man known for his integrity, excellence, honour, generosity, kindness and love, all the things that compromise not only a champion, but also a truly whole human being. It’s no wonder Arnie’s Army has been so faithful to him, for what’s not to like about this man? And so this great life is chronicled in the annals of history, with so many accomplishments noted that it boggles the mind and the imagination!!! But in golf, as in life, character is of tantamount importance. Therefore, I admire his character, just as much as his golfing ability. For a person’s character is comprised of many aspects, one of which is the manner in which he treats his fellow human beings. For in the final analysis, is this not the true measure of any person? The affirmative gets the nod here. And what better example of this than in the splendid person of Mr. Arnold Palmer!!!! All the very best to you Arnie and thank you so very much for showing the rest of us the way!!!! Brian D.
