A TRIBUTE TO THE GENIUS OF PROF. ALI MAZRUI. The Kingdom of readers, writers, philosophers, thinkers, scholars, pan-africanists and the continent as a whole has been plunged into a state of emotional darkness following the death of celebrated writer and scholar prof. Ali Mazrui. Prof Mazrui was an academic giant named among the top one hundred public intellectuals in 2005.His works and awards earn him a place at the table of the world’s finest minds. My generation will eternally feel privileged to have read prof Ali Mazrui’s book ‘kilio cha haki’ for our high school Swahili literature. The rich lessons in social justice that we learnt from kilio cha haki will stay with us for a life time. We owe prof. Mazrui endless gratitude. The greatest honour we can bestow to this great son of Africa is to read his works that include more than 30 books and over 100 essays starting tomorrow morning. We should tap into this oasis of knowledge that forms part of prof. Mazrui’s permanent legacy. The prof. has gone home to join the likes of Nelson Mandela, Wangari Mathai, Julius Nyerere, Ken Sarowiwa, Chinua Achebe. Nadine Gordimer, Barbara Kimenye. Tom Mboya, Francis Imbuga, Leopold sedar senghor, Patrice Lumumba ,Kwame Nkrumah, mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, among others. We who must continue this journey will feel the loneliness of Prof. Mazrui’s absence. We have a duty to refine and renew our faith in pan-africanism. This rejuvenation must pride itself in democracy not despotism, integrity not impropriety, accountability not impunity , patriotism not tribalism. Prof. Ali Mazrui is the kind of gentleman in whose name monuments must be erected, poems must be written, songs composed, books written, highways renamed, institutes named, literature awards inaugurated and annual memorial lecture days set aside by our universities. He flew the Kenyan flag throughout the world in life; in death we should fly the flag at half-mast and observe a week of national mourning. Our government should honour this world renown genius by according him a state burial. This is the least we can do for this extra-ordinary hero of our time. AFRICA AND HUMANITY WILL MISS PROF. ALI MAZRUI.
