A Tale of Two High Schools Once upon a time in the cozy hamlet of Daytona Beach, FL , there were only two public high schools, Mainland and Seabreeze. The kids that lived on the mainland and the southern part of the county went to Mainland and the kids that lived on the beachside and northern part of the county went to Seabreeze. It was this way for as long as anyone could remember. Now kids in those days didn’t move around much so you were pretty much guaranteed to go to school with the same kids from elementary to jr. high to high school. These were the glory days of high school when we had pep rallies, homecoming parades, etc. I’m glad I went to high school then and not now. Then one year, the evil school board decided to open a new school in the southern part of the county. They called this new school Spruce Creek since it was close to the actual Spruce Creek. You may notice that the names of the high schools weren’t very creative. Anyway, I digress. Now why, you ask, was the school board evil? I will tell you. They did not give the senior classes of Mainland and Seabreeze the choice as to whether to stay at their home schools or go to Spruce Creek. So the classes of 1976 of Mainland and Seabreeze were split up and many of their members were the first graduating class of Spruce Creek High. This put somewhat of a damper on our senior year since many of us had gone to school together for years. Personally, my best friend and I were split up and I stayed at Mainland while she went to Spruce Creek. Kids from Mainland went to Seabreeze and Spruce Creek and kids from Seabreeze went to Mainland and Spruce Creek. So our senior classes were very different than what we thought they would be when we started high school. We made the best of it and made new friends but we missed our friends who had gone to the other schools. This video is dedicated to the Spruce Creek and Mainland classes of 1976 and the kids who spent most of their high school years at Mainland. Why, you ask, didn’t I include the Seabreeze class of 1976? The reason is two-fold. One, most of the kids that left Mainland went to Spruce Creek. Two, I have access to my own yearbook from Mainland and my best friend’s yearbook from Spruce Creek. I didn’t have access to the Seabreeze yearbook but for those kids that went from Mainland to Seabreeze, I used your junior pictures. I would have loved to include everyone but it’s hard to find recent pictures if someone is not on Facebook and so many of the girls don’t use their maiden names so I had a hard time locating them. Even though some of the faces have changed, the smiles have stayed the same. Sadly, some included here have left us. I hope you enjoy. They split us up, but we never lost the connection we had to one another. https://youtube/watch?v=ztOHUqK5rf0 MHSSCHS 76 YOUTUBE.COM
