A Texas nurse who tested negative for Ebola after becoming the first person put in mandatory quarantine says she was sickened by the way she was treated at Newark Airport. In a first-person account, Kaci Hickox, 33, described how she was made to feel like a criminal after she told airport officials she was returning from Ebola-ravaged Sierra Leone. “This is not a situation I would wish on anyone, and I am scared for those who will follow me,” Hickox wrote in a column for The Dallas Morning News. “I am scared about how health-care workers will be treated at airports when they declare that they have been fighting Ebola in West Africa. I am scared that, like me, they will arrive and see a frenzy of disorganization, fear and, most frightening, quarantine.” Hickox was still in the air when the governors of New York and New Jersey ordered a 21-day quarantine for arriving air travelers who have had contact with Ebola patients in West Africa. The courageous nurse had been on the front lines of the viral crisis while on assignment with Doctors Without Borders.
