A Thing A Day: 155 Continuing from yesterday… So, can money buy happiness? According to Ed Diener and his fellow researchers, up to a certain point, yes. Other researchers attempted to quantify that point and concluded that the point of diminished returns was around $75k US. Above that point, additional money made notably less contribution to happiness than it did below it. For another thoughtful look at the effect of money on quality of life and well-being check out Planet Money podcast #487 from last week: “The Trouble with the Poverty Line.” npr.org/blogs/money/2013/09/20/224511346/episode-487-the-trouble-with-the-poverty-line The Planet Money report mentions Santa Monica’s proposed Well-Being Index, which proposes to measure individual social connectedness, economic stability, and fulfilling employment among other factors in considering well-being. The city’s document summarizes it as “In short, everything that makes life worthwhile.” Santa Monica is funding development of the index with a $1M award from Bloomberg Philanthropies and is seeking a manager for the project at this time. Could be a fun job for the right candidate. For details see - smgov.net/wellbeing/
