A Thing A Day: 218 How was dinner yesterday? Lot’s to be thankful for in our part of the world! As I wrap up the happiness arc, my thoughts turn from positive feelings toward negative feelings. I wrote about valuing the negative in 197-198. Today I’m thinking again about the necessity to pay attention to negative feelings. One approach toward creating happiness and the good life would be to ignore the negative – sweep it under the proverbial rug or hide it in a corner. And a helpful tactic toward that rug sweeping would be to cultivate positive feelings so well that negative feelings could be devalued and ignored. But we have to ask, would ignoring those negative feelings be beneficial toward the good life? The negative half of our feelings developed primarily to alert us to threats and unmet needs. These alerts serve a life-giving purpose by motivating us to take good care of ourselves. It’s that “good care” that I’m interested in attending to. I’ll continue from there in tomorrow’s Thing.
