A Thought for the Day Some people respond to the promotion of veganism by saying something like, Well, thats your choice and I respect that but its really just a matter of individual preference. Although we *can* choose whether or not to be vegan, that response assumes that being vegan is, as a moral matter, a matter of choice. We can choose all sorts of things. But the fact that we can choose does not mean there is no moral truth about the morality of the choice. For example, we can choose to hate people of color. But is that morally right? Of course not. Racism is wrong as a moral matter. So is speciesism. It is wrong as a moral matter. We can choose to exploit animals but we cannot morally justify it. There is a moral truth here, just as there is in the case of racism and other fundamental moral wrongs.
