A Trip to Oaks Points - Oaks Point is located in State Game Lands 153 in southern Indiana County bordering the Conemaugh River. It is located near the small village of Strangford, on the back side of the Chestnut Ridge Golf Course and not far from Pine Ridge Park. Before the Game Commission acquired the 3,000 acre property, via the Western PA Conservancy in the 1960s, there was a lodge located here. The lodge was destroyed in a fire and is gone but the stone chimney, small swimming pool and other stone structures are still there. Its a decent hike into the site off of Oaks Point Road to get to the site, very rocky and steep in some places. The road itself is not maintained to any great extent. According to the Facebook page I Grew Up in Strangford PA the lodge and surrounding property were owned by the Turners, Graffs, Chicks and a few other families. You can view a photo of the lodge on the Strangford Facebook page, an interesting building. The stone work you see is similar to other stonework that you will find on other houses in the Penn View Mountain area. Oaks Point is Indiana Countys highest peak at an elevation of 2,160 feet. Its the 35th tallest peak in Pennsylvania. When the leaves off the trees there are expansive views of the Chestnut Ridge, Blairsville and surrounding environs.
