A Two State Solution? No, I am not referring to the possibility - TopicsExpress

A Two State Solution? No, I am not referring to the possibility of a two state solution between Israel and Palestine; that would never work. But, what about a Syrian two state solution? If you believe this would work, I recommend you see a clinical psychiatrist right now - maybe an exorcist. A two state solution to the Syrian conflict is ludicrous. The Syrian economy would take a substantial hit in both states. You cannot break up Syria because of the religious sects in the country. Honestly, Syrian Christians can be found in almost every province, save Suwayda (Druze) and Hama (predominately Muslim). Syria is the ancestral home of Christianity. How about the Alawi? Yes, the majority are in Tartous and Latakia, but there are quite a few in Homs, Hama, and now in Damascus. It is the same thing with Sunnis, Kurds, and et al. Syria is a united country. Tourism and the shipping industry drive the economy. Syria is considered a developing country because it still relies on agriculture as its main exports. The economies would not survive without cooperation between both states. Frankly, if they cannot agree on ending the bloodshed, I highly doubt they would find common ground on the issue of tourism. I want a united Syria, based on the principles of secularism and equity for all. I will not watch my country become another Lebanon, where sectarianism has divided the people. -Leith
