A UK quantitative study looked at culture, attitude and knowledge - TopicsExpress

A UK quantitative study looked at culture, attitude and knowledge in breast cancer patients in the UK (2011) found that most of them expressed a lack of knowledge of the disease and its symptoms. The study also found that the perceptions of cancer and health behaviours were influenced by cultural beliefs; such as cancer is a taboo subject and is associated with stigma. Such belief creates a barrier for Asian women to adopt preventive health practices. Amelia, who is passionate about this subject matter, is determined to encourage a change in behaviour among Asian women in New Zealand. She teamed up with Elaine, who is also Asian to organise the biggest Part in Pink in Auckland. That means 100% of ticket fees raised will go directly toward breast cancer prevention research. To ensure that people are getting the message, they have both been talking to their students in the classes about Party in Pink. Most importantly about screening. Amelia said “ many women that I have spoken to did not know it is a free service when you are over 45”. “ They also have a mandarin phone line where you can make the appointment”. She even picked up the phone and called the appointment once they showed interest. She said, “ we all need sisterhood encouragement to soldier on, because it can be a scary thing if you have to do it alone”. Amelia remarked that we really want people to come, it is not just about raising funds but most importantly is showing up and showing your support. On the 18 Oct Friday, with the sponsorship of the Auckland Netball Centre we are able to host around 600 people. We want people to come to celebrate the life that have been impacted by the breast cancer. Write your comments on our Facebook page and tell us whose life are you celebrating? Mothers, sisters, friends or whoever that has left an imprint in your life. Let us do it together and celebrate.
