A United Nations ad campaign attacks Google autocomplete results - TopicsExpress

A United Nations ad campaign attacks Google autocomplete results where they find suggestions like women should... stay at home, be slaves and so on. Its an interesting idea but somewhat flawed for several reasons. First of all the results depend on who you are and where you are. I see women should not be in combat and women should not preach, while I also see men should always pray, men should wear makeup, men should pay for dates. The other reason is that people dont type their opinions in the search bar; they are looking for something. It could be that someone is looking for examples of web pages that are hostile to women. Thirdly, these autocomplete results are easily gamed. If the UN asked all their employees to type women should be treated better that would soon be the top search result. theguardian/commentisfree/2013/oct/22/google-autocomplete-un-women-ad-discrimination-algorithms
