A University of Kansas professor sent a questionnaire to 1,000 prominent men and women across America asking them what are “the most vital problems associated with modern journalism.” Their response was summarized as: “Carelessness that amounts to criminal negligence in the handling of news; a suppression of important news to the advantage of certain interests; a conspiracy with advertisers to mislead honest buyers; and finally a pandering to the nonsocial instincts of its readers.” As reported by the Baltimore Sun, Aug. 26, 1915.
