A VIDEO CASE REPORT MWW For The Hip Joint : nr JMA020115 20 years of hip pain and restrictions: by Josef M Andersen MCTA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Filmed: 17th december 2014, Edited and published: 2nd January 2015. Duration 7+ minutes. edited down from 19 min. Type: Public to share. Please feel free to share with colleagues. Copy Rights: Josef M Andersen Intended for manual therapists and other heath care practitioners with basic and advanced training in The Mulligan Concept. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This movie was filmed in Vedbæk during a Mulligan intensive course. During the course we had three participants with known hip problems, the film illustrates the case of one participant. One of the other participants had a hip problem that is considered mainly of muscular involvement, the other participant had a history hip dysplasia but was able to jog for 22+ km. Her case is interesting but was not considered suitable for course demonstration and was not tested or filmed. The first participant had symmetrical restrictions in hip motion but was symptomatic on the R. Hip and Pelvic testing did not reveal restrictions beyond normal. Spin test was also negative. The case was filmed but not published. BRIEF HISTORY: A sports physiotherapist complained of bilateral hip problems possibly due to history of hip dysplasia, the R hip was clearly symptomatic on a daily basis. Previous assesmnets concluded that there is a labrum tear and CAM impingement, also suspicion of Snapping hip. He experienced daily pain with specific activities involving hip movements, it was obvious through testing that Patric Faber and hip flexion where clearly limited. Previous management and exercise did not resolve the problems. The film should be self explanatory: Translation is attempted to aid non danish viewers. ----------------------------- This film demonstrates that MWM to the hip is very effective in changing ROM and symptoms associated with hip movement restrictions. In this specific case, a combination of hip MWM and Pelvis MWM is shown because a combination of to Mobilisations was needed to achieve optimal change: 1. MWM for the hip: described by Brian Mulligan. 2. MWM technique for the pelvis that is commonly used by the author but not previously published. In adittion to the above, a screening test that is commonly used by the author is shown here. It can be useful as a screening test to determine if the hip as a joint is involved as a source of symptoms. It is often difficult to differentiate between pain relating to pelvis, hip or low back: this test can be a valuable tool in addition to other methods. --------------------------------- The obvious note to be taken from this film: Mobilisations With Movement (MWM) as described by Brian Mulligan is a must know method for manual therapists and medical practitioners, also for individuals involved in sports specific rehabilitation. Caution: We do not know the long term effect after this session and it is common that several sessions may be needed to achieve long lasting results, in addition to that a specific exercise program may augment/support the effect. In my experience, when MWM is indicated and usd appropriately by a trained manual therapist, most common pain conditions will rapidly improve within a relatively very short period of time. Finally I must apologise for not translating every bit of this film, but some of the jokes during the course should not change the main issue. Please take your time to see the whole movie, it is only 7 minutes but may give you an idea of how MWM works in practice when indicated. Please feel free to share with your colleagues, but please note that this film is only intended to individuals who participated in Mulligan Concept courses and do have the basic understanding of the concept as described by Brian Mulligan and instructed by official members of The Mulligan Concept Teachers Association (MCTA) Warm Regards Josef M Andersen Master of Musculoskeletal & Sports Physiotherapy MCTE member, Manager MCTA Europe --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more information regarding The Mulligan Concept and international courses please visit bmulligan For Danish or Norwegian: mulligan.dk mulligan.no
