A WISE MAN WILL HEAR, and WILL INCREASE LEARNING; and a man of UNDERSTANDING SHALL attain unto WISE COUNSELS .. Proverbs 1:5 ☛ Wise - chakam * wise, (that is, intelligent, skilful or artful) ☛ Hear - shama * to hear intelligently (often with implication of attention, obedience, etc.; causatively to tell, etc.) ☛ Increase - yasaph * to add or augment (often adverbially to continue to do a thing) ☛ Learning - leqach * properly something received, that is, (mentally) instruction (whether on the part of the teacher or hearer). ☛ Understanding - biyn * to separate mentally (or distinguish), that is, understand. ☛ attain - qanah * to erect, that is, create; by extension to procure, especially by purchase (causatively sell); by implication to own ☛ Counsels - tachbulah * (only in plural) properly steerage (as a management of ropes), that is, (figuratively) guidance or (by implication) a plan. ☛ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning * The thing that stands out most about this phrase is that the word will is used twice. He will listen and he will increase his learning. ☛ This is showing effort on the part of the listener not just the teacher or person providing the information ... Look at the word shama again * to hear intelligently .. Once again the listener is showing attention and obedience in the act of listening. ☛ A purposeful listening with open ears ... Do we look at the context of the words and how they were used or do we just see the phrase and blindly ignorantly take it in?
