A WORD FROM THE FWMBA PRESIDENT . . . . . The beginning - TopicsExpress

A WORD FROM THE FWMBA PRESIDENT . . . . . The beginning of mountain bike season is upon us! If you’re like me the arrival of fall weather signals the start of mountain bike season in Texas. From the first “cool” day in October (which might happen to be a day when it doesn’t hit the 90’s) till the end of May now is the time to be out on your bike! A lot of folks mistakenly believe that mountain bike season starts during spring when the afternoon temps creep into the 70’s. Of course, we all know where those people are a few months later when temps start hitting triple digits. They’re not riding their bike, they’re riding their couch! Make no mistake about it, from October 2013 till the June 2014 Fat Tire Festival it is mountain bike season in north Texas! Another fact about this time of year is that it is the beginning of mountain bike trail building and maintenance season in FWMBA-Land. From October 2013 till the end of May 2014 FWMBA will be hosting Workfests (our term of endearment for building and maintaining trail) at both Marion Sansom Park and Gateway Park. There will be some big improvements in store at both parks! MSP trail stewards, David and Monty will begin a major trail enhancement project including the armoring of trail, improving culverts, building berms and adding a new, sweet bench overlooking Lone Wolf. Gateway Park trail stewards, Matt and Andy are embarking on adding another 1.5 miles of singletrack on the east side of Gateway in addition to adding 100-carsonite trail markers throughout the mountain bike trail system. This year, more than ever, FWMBA is counting on the folks who use the trails the most to step up and make a difference in building and maintaining our trails. FWMBA will sign a $34,000 grant with Texas Parks and Wildlife this month to fund the trail enhancement project at MSP. FWMBA will be required to pay for the grant with volunteer hours. Before FWMBA can draw on any of the grant dollars 445 volunteer man hours must be logged at Marion Sansom Park between October 2013 and May 2014. It is up to all of the folks who love the MSP trail to get involved and lend a hand! If you’ve not ever helped out with building and/or maintaining trail you’re really missing out on a great opportunity to not only be involved in making a difference in FWMBA, but a great time – really. The Workfests are not all work. Gateway Park trail stewards, Matt and Andy always have a great lunch after the morning work session. David and Monty always have a story to share about the history of FWMBA’s oldest trail. Whether your decide to help out at MSP or Gateway or even both trails it is a great chance to meet new friends and catch up with old ones. I’m not going out on a limb when I say it, but the Workfests are my most favorite FWMBA activity. Check it out and find out for yourself! Our MSP and Gateway Park trail stewards have made it easy for you to plan a date to help out with keeping our singletrack righteous by announcing Workfest dates at both parks. It has never been easier for you (yes, you!) to help make the FWMBA singletrack trails better than ever! The dates for the MSP and Gateway Park Workfests are below. Marion Sansom Park Workfests! . . . . October 26 January 18 February 22 March 22 April 26 May 24 Gateway Park Workfests! . . . . . November 2 December 7 January 4 February 1 March 1 April 5 May 3 M2
